It’s time to celebrate Thanksgiving day 2018 with some special dishes. Thanksgiving both in the United States and Canada is centred around a massive dinner preparation, and in the centre of the table, it is none other than the turkey which roasted and yummy. This roasted turkey is then served with various kinds of side dishes such as different kinds of sauce, mashed potatoes, stuffing and mainly the cranberry sauce. This is the cultural heritage of their country. Most of the preparation which is made for Thanksgiving dinner are from traditional American food style, and this food is made from the foods from the native New World in America. Thanksgiving dinner is the large eating festival, and they eat a lot than any other time of the year.
Historical Menu of Thanksgiving Dinner
In 1621 during the First Thanks Giving Festival, the dinner was made of many traditional foods like Lobster, ham, Venison, waterfowl, berries, clams, pumpkin, fruits and squash. Now William Bradford found out that other than waterfowl there are great stores of wild turkeys and why not use them as a delicacy of the Thanksgiving ceremony. Many foods which were included in the first feast became somewhat staple for the Thanksgiving Dinner.
How Turkey came into being in the Dinner Main Menu
Introduction of Turkey was much before Lincoln who proclaimed this day as the national holiday for the country. Alexander Hamilton agreed on Wild turkey, but Benjamin Franklin did not want Turkey to be one of the central food for the Dinner as he regarded the animal as American’s icon. By 1857 turkey became the part of Thanksgiving Dinner in New England.
Dinner served to Civilian Conservation Corps
The Civilian Conservation Corps reserved Roast turkey, Green olives, celery, pickles, cranberry sauce, fried smelts, tartare sauce, mashed potato, creamed asparagus tips, hot rolls, fruit salads, mincemeat pie, grapes, apples, candies, grapes, fish and many other harvests from the native land.
Alternative to turkey
Other than turkey there is non-traditional food which is even served in Thanksgiving Dinner. In many non-traditional homes, hams are serves besides turkey. In place of Turkey, there are homes which helps duck and Goose which were the European tradition for their Christmas Dinner. In the Northeastern United States, Thanksgiving falls during the deer hunting season, so, instead of Turkey, they use deer as the centre menu. Vegetarian eat a lot of another type of food like tofu, Wheat Gluten, Stuffed squash, lentil-based substitute. In Alaska, the villages also use whale meat in Thanksgiving Dinner with other dishes and drinks alongside.
Side dishes of Thanksgiving Dinner
Besides the centre menu, there should be side dishes which are sometimes traditional and sometimes non-traditional. Mostly the side dishes comprise of mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, brussels sprouts, stuffing or dressing, sweet potatoes, squashes, marsh mellows, brown sugar, molasses, frozen corn, and green beans.
The Thanksgiving Dinner is never complete without cocktails and good mocktails which re served before the meal. On the dinner table apple cider and wine are served and before the meal, it is always spirits and cocktails. There are many who do not indulge in spirits, wine or cocktails. For them, varieties of mocktails are served before or after the meal as per the choice of the guests.
